The old price was RM2.84 a kg.

This is in view of the rise in world prices of raw sugar.

The last price increase was on Oct 25, 2013.

The domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism ministry, in confirming the increase, said the price of sugar was still low when compared with certain other countries.

While prices of coarse and fine granulated sugar are controlled by the government, prices of premium sugar — caster, icing, brown and soft brown sugar — are not.

MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd, the country’s largest refined sugar producer, said it had increased the prices of its premium sugar to wholesalers by 20% to 30% in November last year.

MSM had also requested the government to increase prices of refined sugar by 20-30%.
