DAP to EC: Are voter registration forms made of gold?

Assemblywoman Hannah Yeoh is frustrated that DAP is often unable to get voter registration forms and that some post offices are turning away potential voters for a lack of forms.

PETALING JAYA: DAP assemblywoman Hannah Yeoh has criticised the Election Commission’s (EC) failure to provide sufficient forms for voter registration.

In a statement today, she said the DAP had encountered numerous such shortages during its voter registration programmes despite repeated reminders to the EC to prepare more forms.

“Is there a lack of budget for printing of registration forms or are the forms made of gold, resulting in a lack of willingness to part with these forms?” she asked.

Yeoh said according to a March 3 Facebook post by DAP assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong, the head of Kg Pasir Kerling Village Development and Security Committee Yusoff Stak and his counterpart in Ampang Pecah, Rihajuddin Anwarkhan @ Tajol, had requested an additional 1,000 forms from the EC. However, they were turned away with only 100 forms each – 10% of the number requested.

Yeoh said some post offices were also turning people away with the same excuse of not having any voter registration forms.

She asked if this was a case of discrimination against the DAP and an attempt to stop its assemblymen from running voter registration campaigns in their constituencies.

Yeoh, who is Selangor Legislative Assembly Speaker and vice-chairman of Selangor DAP, added that the EC was already unable to cope with the DAP’s campaigns, forcing the cancellation of many programmes.

“Now, the EC is further frustrating our efforts by limiting the number of forms being given out.

“Facilitating registration of voters is one of the core duties of the EC and it is most shameful that the Election Commission in Selangor is so ill-equipped to execute it,” she said.
