GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he leads many state agencies because he was “elected by the people”.

He said this in response to claims that he was less than qualified to be the state water utility company’s chairman.

Rizal Mansor, an aide to Prime Minister Najib Razak, lashed out yesterday at DAP’s Yeo Bee Yin for asking the prime minister’s wife Rosmah Mansor to resign as patron of Permata, a government agency related to early childhood development.

Yeo had asked Rosmah to resign if she could not tolerate public scrutiny, after Rosmah told critics not to politicise and cast aspersions on Permata.

Yeo then said Permata can be run by experienced people at the respective ministries.

Rizal said Rosmah was more than qualified for the job, as she held a master’s in sociology.

Rizal then asked Yeo to ask Lim if he was an expert in water research, since he was appointed as “non-executive director of Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBA).”

Lim is currently non-executive chairman of the PBA Holdings Berhad and an economics graduate turned professional accountant.

The DAP secretary-general also drew comparison with Kedah Menteri Besar Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah.

Lim said Bashah, who “had not completed his studies”, was also chair of many state agencies.

“Although I am not a water expert, I am holding this position because I am CM. The CM post comes from the people’s vote. Rosmah’s post was not determined by polls.

“Please do not talk about that when she is just the PM’s wife. You have the position by marriage. And hence you are the patron.

“So, please do not drag me into this issue.” Lim said in a press conference in Komtar.
