PAS has no right to impose conditions, says Dr Mahathir

With four-party Pakatan Harapan, former PM says the next step would be to register coalition under one logo to take on BN in next general election.

PUTRAJAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) will not entertain PAS’ threat to sever ties with the party if it joins opposition pact Pakatan Harapan (PH).

PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the Islamist party has no right to even issue such a threat.

“PAS has no right to impose conditions on our coalition.

“The coalition has been formed. Anyone who wishes to join can do so, there are no conditions,” he told a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here today.

PAS youth chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz had earlier this afternoon, said the party will cut all ties with PPBM now that the latter has officially become the newest member of PH.

But the matter will be discussed and finalised in the upcoming PAS central committee meeting, he said.

The PH presidential council yesterday accepted PPBM as its fourth component party, and agreed on having the coalition officially registered.

Mahathir had on March 14 announced that PPBM’s members had unanimously agreed to form an alliance with PH and under the proposal, all four PH parties would use a common logo and manifesto.

He also proposed for the coalition’s name to be changed. But today, the former prime minister said a name change no longer matters.

“We are going to contest (in the next general election) as PH, as a coalition. We can have a new logo or name but that depends.

“That is because we will field candidates on behalf of the coalition, not individual parties. Just like Barisan Nasional (BN) when they contest, they use the BN logo.

“We have to make sure that the people will recognise the symbol as belonging to the opposition coalition,” the former prime minister said.
