Rokiah, a single mother, worked in a factory for 18 years under constant pressure from a demanding employer. When she finally called it quits there, she sallied forth into the last job anyone would expect: driving a 10-wheel lorry trailer.
According to a report by theSun, Rokiah makes at least 150 trips a month, picking up containers from ships at the Penang Port and delivering them to the depot for repairs.
Her job is unconventional and does not provide basic pay. However, it allows her to be her own boss. Rokiah, affectionately known as “Kak Lori”, told the daily that her hours were flexible – the more trips she does, the more she earns.
As it is, she is easily able to earn up to RM7,000 a month, the report said. She also receives food allowance, commissions and bonuses.
Although she is sometimes hassled for being a woman in a male-dominated industry, she says she doesn’t allow it to bother her.
In the report, she recounted an incident in which a group of drunken men stopped her in the middle of the road and began verbally assaulting her. However, the daily said, a passerby came to her aid and chased them away.
In a Facebook post under an account said to belong to Rokiah, she even joked that her boss only wanted women workers now as he said they were more hardworking.
“Boss dah ramai pekerja lelaki. Dia cuma mau pekerja perempuan. Rajin kerja. Kata boss (Boss has many male workers. He only wants women drivers now. He says they are hardworking)” the post read.
