Damansara Utama assemblywoman Yeo Bee Yin, Dapsy national executive member Dyana Sofya and Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran were among the DAP members who lodged the police report at the Damansara Police Station today.
They carried placards saying “Say no to racism” in protest of Annuar’s competition that states the essay must carry the title: “Adakah benar Lim Kit Siang seorang rasis, anti-Islam dan 51 tahun diktator?” (Is it true that Lim Kit Siang is racist, anti-Islam and a 51-year-old dictator?). It comes with a RM10,000 cash prize.
Yeo said the police report was lodged on the basis that Annuar, who is Ketereh MP, was holding a competition that incited hatred among Malaysians as well as threatened the safety of veteran politician Lim Kit Siang.
“If people believe the lies, then he (Kit Siang) will be in danger,” Yeo said.
She took note that DAP’s Zaid Ibrahim had held a similar competition on Prime Minister Najib Razak being the worst Prime Minister the country had witnessed but said the two were different.
“Zaid’s competition is performance-based but what Annuar is doing is racial and incites hatred.”
Dyana, pointed out that Annuar had, in a Red Shirts rally in 2015, admitted to being racist himself.
“We (DAP) agreed with him but now he’s calling Kit Siang a racist and this competition is just Umno’s typical way of using money and lies to cover their own actions.
“If what he says about Kit Siang is true then he should lodge a police report but he doesn’t because he has no proof,” she said.
Rajiv said it was typical of Umno to use race to garner support.
“When leaders open their mouths they either promote racial unity or disunity and Annuar is promoting the latter.
“Annuar should fight DAP on policy matters but he’s using race because he is bankrupt of ideas and is resorting to racial statements to scare people into voting for Umno. This is not the way,” he said.
Yeo also urged Malaysians to vote based on the performance of a representative and not his or her race.
Dyana urged Malaysians to show support for anti-racist initiatives and added, “We encourage Malaysians to print their own ‘Say no to racism’ signs and take a picture of themselves holding it to show that we Malaysians are against racism.”
