PM’s aide calls for social media skills as school subject

Rizal Mansor wants education ministry to identify specific subject so that students can also learn how to filter news and information that is incorrect.

The education ministry is urged to create a social media skills subject in schools in line with the current rapid development in information technology.

Prime Minister’s Office Special Division principal assistant director Rizal Mansor said the time had come for the government to think about the syllabus or special subject on social media skills as it was increasingly important.

“Social media skills are important because it can connect us with people and today it is an increasingly important skill as a lot of information is channelled through social media.

“Maybe the education ministry is able to identify a specific subject so that students can be proficient in the use of social media and at the same time skilled to filter news and information that is incorrect.

“The ability to be proficient in social media is very important because many people use social media nowadays,” he told Bernama during the closing ceremony of the project “Lets Speak and Be Ready For Job 2017” here today.
