KUALA LUMPUR: A former policeman who used violence against his Myanmar girlfriend to get her to pay his debts was fined RM3,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today.

Magistrate Mahyudin Mohmad Som handed out the fine in default of four months’ jail on Zamzuri Ainul Musli, 48, who pleaded guilty to the charge.

Zamzuri, who is now a GrabCar driver, was charged with extorting RM1,000 from bar waitress Lum Nyoi, 23, at a condominium at Jalan Tengkat Tong Shin here at 4am on Aug 7 last year.

The charge under Section 384 of the Penal Code provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years with a fine or whipping, or with any two such punishments upon conviction.

In mitigation, Zamzuri, who was not represented, said he regretted his actions and had a wife, four children and a father to support.
