KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission today obtained a five-day remand for a senior director with the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YaPEIM).

It is understood that the 47-year old has been remanded to assist in investigation into criminal breach of trust.

According to MACC sources, the suspect was arrested at 5pm yesterday after he was brought to the commission’s headquarters for questioning.

Magistrate Nik Isfahnie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman granted the remand order after the suspect was brought to the court here, this morning.

While details remain sketchy, YaPEIM came under the spotlight two years ago after Akmal Nasir, an anti-corruption activist, urged authorities to investigate the foundation, including the board of trustees and the minister involved, Jamil Khir Baharom.

Akmal, who heads the National Oversight and Whistleblowers (NOW) group, pushed police to investigate YaPEIM for misconduct, abuse of power or breach of trust, by which “the money was used not for the purpose of charity” as originally intended.
