18 hurt as storm hits traders’ tents at PAS muktamar

Children among those injured as raging thunderstorm leaves 30 tents destroyed.

ALOR SETAR: At least 18 people have been injured after a raging thunderstorm sent 30 traders’ tents crashing to the ground at the PAS Complex in Kota Sarang Semut here, where the Islamist party’s muktamar is being held.
The incident occurred at around 7pm at the makeshift trading area, located at the side of the complex.

It is understood that the tents were blown over by strong winds.

PAS Youth secretary Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamuddin told FMT the injured were being rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment.

“The Fire and Rescue Department along with the PAS Unit Amal are still carrying out rescue operations.”

FMT understands that of the 18, at least two suffered broken bones.

At the scene, ambulances were seen entering and leaving the complex area.

In an immediate response, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu – a former PAS deputy president – conveyed his sympathies to the victims.

“I hope the people of Kedah, especially PAS members who are attending the muktamar remain calm and I pray for their safety.

“To those who are injured, I wish them a speedy recovery.”

Kedah Amanah chairman Dr Ismail Salleh, also expressed his sympathy for the victims and said, “I pray that the muktamar can continue.”

Amanah – a splinter of PAS – is led by former PAS leaders.
