PETALING JAYA:
Police say yesterday’s early morning brawl between 80 young men in front of the Ampang Hospital was not related to secret societies or illegal racing activities.

Ampang Jaya district police chief ACP Hamzah Alias said the clash was caused by a misunderstanding between the youths who had gathered there.

“They all wanted to show off (tunjuk lagak). They like gathering together. However there was a misunderstanding, they started to challenge each other and a small fight ensued.

“They were not from any gang or Mat Rempit groups. They were just hanging out in big numbers over the long weekend,” he told FMT today.

Two men were arrested yesterday in the 3.15am incident when police on their routine rounds saw the 80 youths engaged in a fight near the hospital. They were using motorcycle helmets to swing at each other and the group was spread out on both sides of the road.

One person was also reportedly seen wielding a parang.

The two suspects, aged 28 and 33, have been remanded till Wednesday.

The case is being investigated under section 6 (1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, for carrying offensive weapons in a public space.

A five-minute video of the clash went viral on social media recently.

Hamzah said no new arrests were made as the detained suspects refused to cooperate in investigations.

“Do not accuse them of being from any specific gang, Mat Rempit group and so on, or else people will be afraid to come out of their homes.

“This kind of fight can happen anywhere,” he said.
