PETALING JAYA: Zakir Naik, the controversial preacher from India who holds Malaysian permanent residence, is currently not in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Associated Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Maicci) learnt this in a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Thursday, Malaysiakini reported.

Maicci said Zahid also told them that the Malaysian government would assist India in its investigations if requested.

This includes facilitating investigations by Indian authorities when Zakir is in Malaysia, the group told the news portal.

Maicci said Zahid also reassured the Indian community that Malaysia had no history of harbouring fugitives.

Maicci raised its concerns about Naik’s presence in Malaysia.

“Maicci highlighted to the deputy prime minister its concern over the tolerance shown by Malaysian authorities on the extreme statements made by Zakir Naik in his preaching and his continued presence in Malaysia, although he remains wanted in India on allegations of propagating terrorism and money laundering.

“To these, the DPM explained that Malaysia had never colluded to keep any fugitive in our country,” Maicci was reported as saying yesterday.

It also handed over a seven-point memorandum on foreign workers’ policy and the Malaysian Indian blueprint to Zahid at the meeting held in Putrajaya.
