KUALA LUMPUR:
Former DAP secretary-general Kerk Kim Hock has died.

According to his son, Chee Yee, Kim Hock had undergone thrombolytic therapy (which dissolves dangerous clots in blood vessels for better flow) on Sunday, due to the deep vein thrombosis (DVT) he was suffering from.

“The operation was successful. One of the possible risks communicated to us was internal bleeding, which was what took place in his brain hours after the operation.

“The bleeding in his brain put him in a coma. After battling for three days, he left us peacefully,” he said in a statement.

Chee Yee said he, his mother and sister were by Kim Hock’s side when he died at 6.10pm today.

“We thank everyone for their support and encouragement throughout his battle against the illness.”

He added that details of the funeral arrangements would be announced later.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, in a press conference at the media centre in the Dewan Rakyat, extended his deepest condolences to Kim Hock’s family.

“He was a devoted and good secretary-general and led the party during its darkest hours.

“We feel sad at his sudden passing, even though he has been in a coma for the past three days,” he said.

Lim said Kim Hock’s death was a loss to the party and country.

“I have known him since university days. He was a student leader, a party leader and a people’s leader. He has done his part.

“Even when battling cancer, he fought the battle with his usual courage and determination.

“We will not forget his contributions. We will remember you. Rest in peace,” he added.
