The Republican, who assumed the presidency in January after defeating former first lady and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in Nov last year, revealed this in his schedule for the day posted on his official Facebook account.
Trump listed “meeting with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of Malaysia” as the fourth item in his official schedule, followed by a separate item listed as an “expanded meeting” with Najib.
He is then scheduled to hold a meeting with US secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who made an official visit to Malaysia in early August when he held discussions with Najib in Putrajaya.
It has been reported that Trump’s talks with Najib will place importance on three fundamental security issues.
They are the military threat of North Korea which has been brandishing nuclear capable missiles, the aggressive incursions by China in the South China Sea where it has built reclaimed islands with air and naval combat hardware in disputed areas, and the rising threat of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist network in Southeast Asia.
In a statement on Aug 23, the office of the press secretary in the White House said Trump would also celebrate with Najib the 60th anniversary of US-Malaysia bilateral relations during the visit today.
It is understood that the two leaders would also attempt to iron out trade and investment issues.
Reuters reported that Najib would be announcing a US$1.8 billion (RM7.57 billion) deal for the purchase of eight widebody Boeing 787 jets by Malaysia Airlines after the meeting.
Prior to the discussions, Trump will hold a special meeting with commerce secretary Wilbur Ross, be given an intelligence briefing and hold a separate meeting with national security advisor HR McMaster.
He will also hold talks with Scott Pruitt, the head of the US Environmental Protection Agency, most likely over the hurricane situation in some parts of the US.
Meanwhile, Najib was quoted as saying that Malaysia had been a partner in the US-led global coalition to defeat the IS where it fought against violent extremism through the promotion of moderation and a “deradicalisation programme” which he claimed has had a 90% success rate.
“We have fought this through intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism measures in our region and beyond. I am proud to say that the Royal Malaysian Police has thwarted at least 13 major terrorist attacks since 2012.
“And we have fought this through being a partner in the US-led global coalition to defeat Daesh (IS) and through the strategic dialogue between our Ministry of Defence and the Pentagon,” he said in his article titled ‘Malaysian Prime Minister: Trump, We have your back in fighting ISIS’ published in The Hill, a top US political website, yesterday.
