KUCHING: Sarawak welcomes the announcement in the 2018 Budget, which saw the state getting a huge allocation, amounting to RM1 billion, for upgrading and refurbishing of dilapidated schools, said Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg.

“I thank the prime minister ( Najib Razak). When I asked RM1 billion on top of the normal budget, he approved and gave Sarawak RM1 billion for our schools.

“And my request to the prime minister is for the implementation to be made by Sarawak, and not in Putrajaya, to avoid bureaucratic red-tape.”

He said this in his speech when closing the Worldskills Malaysia Sarawak 2017 competition at the Borneo Convention centre here today.

Najib, when tabling the 2018 Budget last Friday, said there were 2,000 dilapidated schools nationwide in need of upgrading and refurbishing.

He said the repair works would be carried out through the industrial building system (IBS) and the government was allocating RM2.5 billion for the purpose.

Out of this amount, RM500 million would be spent for schools in the peninsula and RM1 billion each in Sabah and Sarawak.
