Party president Mah Siew Keong said the candidates for 45 parliamentary and state seats were mostly new faces and they had worked hard in the areas for the past five years.
Mah said the party is still negotiating five seats with fellow BN component parties and did not rule out the possibility of swapping seats with MCA.
“Switching seats is possible but we have not finalised the matter yet,” he said during a press conference after holding a meeting with Najib at Gerakan headquarters in Cheras.
Mah, who is also the plantation industries and commodities minister, said he did not wish to see a “zero sum game” between Gerakan and MCA.
“I cannot deny we (MCA, Gerakan) have had problems before.
“But we came to an understanding that we need to work together in this 14th general election,” he said.
Earlier this month, Gerakan and MCA held a joint gathering at MCA headquarters to strengthen their working relationship.
The gathering was attended by over 2,500 MCA and Gerakan members.
During the 2013 general election, Gerakan only won the Simpang Renggam parliamentary seat in Johor along with three state seats, namely Elopura and Tanjong Papat in Sabah, and Pemanis in Johor.
Mah was elected as Teluk Intan MP in 2014 in a by-election after its DAP MP, Seah Leong Peng, died of cancer aged 48 the same year.
Mah expressed confidence the party can win back some state seats in Penang.
“We are confident that Penangites will vote in some of our members in the state to keep a check-and-balance on what the DAP-led government is doing,” he said.
Mah pointed out DAP had won all 19 state seats they contested in 2013.
“They won 100% of the contested seats and this made them arrogant.”
