KOTA KINABALU: An undocumented Indonesian man chose to risk his life rather than spend time behind bars by jumping off a three-storey building in an attempt to avoid arrest.

But he broke his leg when he landed and was taken to hospital where he was immediately placed under arrest for immigration offences.

According to Tawau district police chief ACP Fadil Marsus, the 40-year-old man had been living with a family member in a shophouse in Bandar Sabindo.

“At 9.50am, an immigration department team carried out Ops Ikrar at the site and caught a foreigner for not having identification documents on him.

“Around that time, the team was informed that a man, who was a resident in the building, had ‘fallen’ off the third floor of the building,” he said.

The man was believed to be a family member of the suspect who was already in custody at the time.

Fadil said police had not determined the man’s identity as he was being treated in the emergency ward. “No foul play is suspected,” he added.
