Ummi, who had been a strong critic of the opposition, first made headlines as a witness in PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim’s first sodomy case in 1998. She was last in the spotlight during the 13th general election when she joined in Umno’s campaign.
On July 28, 2015, she had burst into tears over the sacking of Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, warning that “Umno will go down to the grave”. She also announced that she was resigning as an Umno member with immediate effect.
Last December, the businesswoman had warned the public to steer clear of PKR.
Today, Ummi said she would put those criticisms against PKR aside to focus on the battle against BN.
“Times have changed. Now my focus is to render my support for Dr Mahathir, and to fight alongside him to champion the people’s rights.
“The 27 million Malaysians know what good things Dr Mahathir has done for the country.
“He might have made some mistakes in the past as a leader of the country, but he isn’t God,” she said when met by reporters at a PPBM fund-raising luncheon.
Ummi has also offered to help Mahathir in his general election campaign.
“Before this, Umno used me to help them campaign. I didn’t ask them for a single sen.
“But if they ask me again today, even if they come and worship me, I will not agree to campaign for them.
“I didn’t come for today’s fundraiser to lobby for bribes. I have in fact made contributions to this event. These were from my business profits.”
Ummi had previously rejected PKR and hit out at her brother (Azmin) over corruption allegations related to sand mining.
“I am supporting Tun, not PKR.
“The agenda is to bury Barisan Nasional (BN). Whatever his (Mahathir) strategy is, I will follow. I’m loyal to my ‘sifu’ (master),” she said.
When asked if she would join PPBM, she said she would consider this once the party is officially recognised.
Asked about her relationship with her brother, Azmin, Ummi said they may not be in good terms, but they both cannot deny their blood ties.
“We don’t hate each other and we have to accept that we are siblings.
“Everybody knows we are not on talking terms. But he acknowledges that I am his sister. Blood is thicker than water.
“You saw his body language earlier … he didn’t look at me, but we fight the same battle, that is to bury BN,” she said.
Ummi had been sitting at the same table as Mahathir and his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali. Azmin came and greeted Mahathir and his wife but chose to ignore Ummi.
Ummi is the youngest of six siblings in the family.
