Najib no-show at Umno headquarters

Dozens of local and foreign journalists waited in vain for the BN chairman, as reports trickle in of major gains by PH.

KUALA LUMPUR:
A pall has fallen over Umno headquarters at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) with questions being raised as to the whereabouts of Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Najib Razak, while Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed victory in Malaysia’s most-keenly fought general election.

Malaysian and international journalists have been left in limbo for a press conference expected to be held by Najib to discuss the results of the general election.

Najib is Umno president as well as caretaker prime minister of the BN-led federal government.

BN deputy chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is home minister, and Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein, who is defence minister, were seen entering the building and going straight to the party’s office at Menara Dato Onn. Wanita Umno leader Shahrizat Abdul Jalil was seen leaving PWTC earlier.

Dr Mahathir had said earlier tonight that PH had achieved a majority of seats in the Dewan Rakyat, as well as having won six state governments.

He accused the Election Commission of delaying the announcement of results, to forestall him from seeking an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah has denied it was deliberately delaying the results, and urged Malaysians to be patient for the official results.
