The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) said an inquiry would be held.
Police said later that a post-mortem examination had conducted Graduate Cadet Officer J. Soosaimanicckam, 27, died of pneumonia.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that they were no criminal elements or signs of physical abuse and the case was classified as sudden death,” Manjung district police chief Muhammad Hanif Othman, was quoted as saying.
Soosaimanicckam, 27, had complained of chest pain and shortness of breath at 12.20pm at the residential block where he lived.
The cadet officer had earlier completed a physical exercise session as part of routine training.
He was then rushed to HAT Lumut where cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was conducted. He was pronounced dead at 1.45pm, said the statement.
The cadet officer had been attending the Qualification Course for Graduate Officers at KD Sultan Idris, the navy training college, since May 12.
The RMN has set up a board of inquiry to review its standard operating procedures following Soosaimanicckam’s death.
“Should there be any SOP violation, RMN will not compromise or protect those who have breached the procedures in carrying out their duties,” the statement added.
