PETALING JAYA:
Human rights activist Kua Kia Soong has questioned the wisdom of people who have signed an online petition to get Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad nominated for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize.

He asked whether they thought he deserved it just because he won an election or if they believed he had worked for human rights in Malaysia or for peace in Asia.

“Has he deracialised Malaysia by repealing racist policies? Or maybe he has decided to demilitarise Malaysia and has won over the whole of Asean to do the same.

“And has he said anything about Korean unification and denuclearisation?”

Kua spoke to FMT yesterday, when 96,000 people had signed the petition.

He speculated that US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un might win the prize this year “when it should be Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in”.

He also said the prize was not worth the time and effort put in by those who had signed the petition.

“The Nobel Peace Prize is a farce and everyone knows it,” he said.

“Aung San Suu Kyi, who was awarded the prize in 1991, is now exposed as complicit in the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar.

“The 1973 recipient, Henry Kissinger, was recognised for his efforts in negotiating a ceasefire in the Vietnam war while the US was secretly carpet-bombing Cambodia.

“In 1994, the recipients were Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin, and Yasser Arafat. Peres had systematically built up Israel’s nuclear capabilities. Two years after receiving the prize, he was responsible for the Qana massacre that killed 106 people sheltering in a UN compound in Lebanon.”

Peres was Israeli prime minister between 1984 and 1986 and again in 1995 and 1996. Rabin also served two terms as the Israeli prime minister (1974-77 and 1992-95). Arafat was a long time leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation.

“There have been other dubious choices for the Nobel Peace Prize, including Barack Obama, who allowed more bombings than any US president before him,” Kua added.

He noted that some peace activists had refused to be associated with the prize, giving the example of Mordechai Vanunu, a nuclear technician who spent 18 years in prison for leaking details of Israel’s nuclear programme.
