Malaysia to withdraw troops from Saudi Arabia

Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu says the decision was made by the Cabinet last week.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu says the Cabinet has decided to pull Malaysian troops out of Saudi Arabia, where they have been on standby to evacuate Malaysians in war-torn Yemen.

Mohamad, popularly known as Mat Sabu, said the decision was made last week.

“We will discuss with the foreign ministry on when to bring them back,” he told a group interview with the media at his ministry here today.

On June 20, the government said it would review the stationing of Malaysian troops in Saudi Arabia.

Mohamad said the presence of Malaysian troops, who were stationed there by the previous government, had caused the country to be indirectly dragged into the Middle East conflict.

“Malaysia has always adopted a neutral policy and does not favour any political ideology of the world’s major powers,” he said.
