STOCKHOLM:
Swedish freeride skiing champion Matilda Rapaport has died after she was swept away by an avalanche in Chile, Sweden’s ski federation said on Monday.

The 30-year-old, the wife of Swedish alpine skier Mattias Hargin, was trapped by an avalanche last Thursday while making a film in the Farellones resort in the Andes mountains.

“Matilda remained under the snow for a long time, she fell into a coma and died from complications resulting from a lack of oxygen,” the Swedish federation said in a statement.

“It’s a terrible accident, it’s very difficult to accept. Our thoughts go out to Matilda’s family and friends,” said federation chief Tommy Eliasson Winter.

Her death comes just three months after Switzerland’s two-time world extreme snowboarding champion Estelle Balet was killed by an avalanche in the Swiss Alps.
