Dr Mahathir apologises for saying Memali deaths ‘mati katak’

It comes after PAS slams the former prime minister for insulting the family of villagers who died in the 1985 police operation.

PETALING JAYA:
Dr Mahathir Mohamad has apologised to the family of victims of the 1985 Kampung Memali tragedy in Kedah, hours after saying their deaths were in vain, using the derogatory Malay phrase “mati katak”.

“Maybe my words are harsh, and as such I apologise,” the Pakatan Harapan chairman said in a short video post today.

His remarks last night were condemned by PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, saying it was “extreme humiliation” of the Memali victims.

“But I am convinced people like Dr Mahathir won’t apologise,” Tuan Ibrahim had said.
