Soon Huat-Shevon shock world No 2 duo to make China Open semifinals

The married mixed doubles pair knocked out Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin after a 23-21, 21-16 win.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Professional mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai caused an upset at the China Open when they knocked out the home team’s world No 2 duo Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin today.

The married couple defeated their opponents 23-21, 21-16 in straight games in just 34 minutes.

Awaiting them in the semifinals are another Chinese pair, Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi, who defeated Japanese duo Hiroki Midorikawa-Natsu Saito 21-15, 21-19.

“The court conditions were in our favour today because the wind is quite strong in the arena. I think that gave us the edge in the match,” said Shevon in an audio shared by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Also advancing to the semifinals tomorrow are national men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who defeated fellow countrymen Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun.

The seventh seeds had no problem recording a 21-19, 21-18 win.

They will meet Shohibul Fikri-Daniel Marthin in the semifinals after the Indonesians defeated Danish representatives Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard 21-19, 21-19.

Another national mixed doubles pair, Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin, were knocked out by Indonesian duo Dejan Ferdinansyah-Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja 14-21, 9-21.
