“Spoon-feeding” has lost its negative connotation, thanks to Bakeys’ innovation of edible eating utensils

First you eat with it, then you EAT it! Introducing edible cutlery, which lets you chomp on your chopsticks, feed on your forks, snack on your spoons, and nosh on your knives.

The brainchild of Hyderabad-based Groundwater Researcher and Bakeys Industries founder Narayana Peesapaty, edible cutlery was born of India’s voracious appetite (not literally) for disposable eating utensils – and worries over the effects this was having on the environment. A sustainable-living innovator, Peesapaty began chewing on the idea of cutlery that you don’t throw away, but consume as part of your meal.

Bakeys edible cutlery is made from robust millet bread, and far from being fragile or easily-dissolvable, they’re (surprisingly) as hard as wood, and have a shelf life of up to three years. And if the tree-hugger in you now feels sadly duty-bound to gorge on edible, but not particularly healthy or flavourful, forks and spoons, chin up! Bakeys edible cutlery is highly nutritious and contains no preservatives.

If that fails to pique your interest (are you dead on the inside?), consider this: Bakeys’ edible cutlery come in various flavours, including Ginger-Cinnamon, Ginger-Garlic, Cumin, Black Pepper, Celery, Mint-Ginger, Carrot-Beetroot, Hot ‘n Spicy, Onion-Tomato and Sweet. And if you’re not particularly in the mood to feast on cutlery, just toss it to your potted plants, or simply dispose of them in your garden, where it will decompose beautifully.

Peesapaty has earned plaudits for his potentially revolutionary creation and contribution to sustainable living (especially since he did everything from scratch – no spoon-feeding for him!), and was invited to speak at the prestigious TED Talks conference on his innovation.
