It's time for another (colon-free, non-numbered) sequel, but without J. J. Abrams at the helm.

Has it really been three years since “Star Trek Into Darkness”? In any case it’s time for another (colon-free, non-numbered) sequel, but without J. J. Abrams at the helm.

What’s it about?

Promising starship captain James T Kirk is re-evaluating his own place in the universe but the universe has other plans than quiet contemplation; his ship and crew are suddenly and brutally attacked by an unknown assailant and find themselves stuck on an alien planet with no easy way out.

Who’s in it?

We can expect all the usual officers on board the spaceship USS Enterprise to return, with Chris Pine once again playing Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto flexing his eyebrows as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as Bones, Simon Pegg as Scotty, John Cho as Sulu, and Anton Yelchin in one of his final film appearances as Chekov.

For the first time, they’ll be encountering Algerian actress and musician Sofia Boutella (previously of “Kingsman: The Secret Service”) as alien warrior Jaylah, and Idris Elba (of “Thor,” “Pacific Rim” and “Beasts of No Nation”) as the crew’s main threat.

Who’s behind it?

With J. J. Abrams having moved from the first two “Star Trek” reboots over to heavy involvement in the new “Star Wars” trilogy, Taiwanese-American director Justin Lin comes in having completed four films in the “Fast and Furious” franchise and, most recently, the first two episodes of “True Detective” season 2.

Doug Jung of action-oriented crime drama “Dark Blue” wrote it with Pegg, who also penned “The World’s End,” “Hot Fuzz” and “Shaun of the Dead.”

When’s it out?

Much of the international salvo for “Star Trek Beyond” is primed for the same week as its US and Canadian release on July 22.

That includes territories like the UK and Ireland, Germany, Mexico, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, India, Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam.

Later arrivals include Spain (August 5), France (August 17), South Korea, Turkey and South Africa (week of August 25), Brazil and Argentina (September 1), and the world’s fourth biggest film-going nation, Japan (October 21).

Where are the trailers?

Paramount Pictures’ YouTube account has been compiling a playlist, whose trailers, promotional interviews, and TV clips start, while a Facebook page has been provided at StarTrekMovie, Tweets are dispersed from startrekmovie, and an official site is found at startrekmovie.com.

Rihanna soundtracked the most recent trailers and her own Trek-ish music video is at Sledgehammer.
