Pantone Color Institute has revealed a new colour called Love Symbol #2, created in honour of the 'Purple One'.

The colour authority worked with the Prince Estate on the dusty purple hue, inspired by the late musician’s symbol and custom-made Yamaha purple piano, with which he was to go on tour before his death in 2016 at the age of 57.

Prince became associated with the colour purple following the 1984 release of the film “Purple Rain”, which starred the artist, and his Oscar-winning soundtrack for it, including the title song. “Purple Rain” the album also went on to win multiple Grammy Awards.

While Pantone says the full spectrum of purple will still be used to honour the artist, Love Symbol #2 is now “the official colour across the brand he left behind.”

“Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself,” said Laurie Pressman of the Pantone Color Institute.
