Ideally, any air-conditioning unit in your home should be serviced at least once a year. Servicing your air-conditioners has several benefits.
It keeps the air cleaner, saves electricity and extends the lifespan of the unit. If you put off servicing your air-conditioner for a long time, it could cause several problems.
One of these could be that your air-conditioners will trip the circuit breaker in your home.
This happens if your air-conditioning unit is using more power than the circuit breaker allows. If the unit is pulling more amps and using more power than usual, then the circuit breaker will trip.
If your circuit breaker keeps tripping and you can identify that your unit is the cause, these could be some of the reasons why:
1. Dirty air filter

Drawing air in and blowing it out through air filters that are caked with dust will definitely push your air-conditioners to use more power, and in particular the blower.
Blowers have to work harder in order for it to push the air through blocked filters and this may cause an increase in power demand, thereby tripping your circuit breaker.
2. Clogged condenser coil

The condenser coil is located in the outside unit of your air-conditioner and functions to dispel accumulated heat and cool the air down.
The coil cannot perform its job properly if it’s dirty and clogged with dust, and will, therefore, require more energy to do its job.
As mentioned earlier, if too much electrical current is needed to disperse the heat, the breaker will trip.
3. Trouble with the motors

All the circulation of the air in your air-conditioner is powered by a fan motor. If the fan blades are too dusty or the motor itself has some circuitry that is too old, it can cause the motor to short circuit.
Either one of these issues can cause a surge in energy demand that will cause the power supply to trip.
4. Insufficient coolant

When there isn’t enough refrigerant in the cooling coils, you’ll find that the air-conditioner will start using more energy.
If the level of cooling refrigerant is not topped up, the unit will start using more and more electrical current to actually keep the air cool.
This problem is easily remedied by professional aircond specialists who can top it up during the service.
5. Electrical wiring issues

This is especially true for air-conditioning units that are slightly older. There may be loose wiring, old components or parts that have short-circuited due to internal circuitry issues.
Regular servicing can allow technicians to detect these problems early and repair them for you.
