Lotus EVIJA confirmed for 2020

The Lotus Evija, pronounced 'ev-eye-a', is the first all-electric hypercar from the British car maker.

Due to start production in 2020, this Lotus EVIJA will be the world’s first British EV hypercar. This will be the first major Lotus model launch under the stewardship of Geely which is the world’s fastest growing automotive group.

The revival of Lotus under Geely gives this iconic brand a new lease of life and its parent’s target is the Italian and German supercar brands that have long dominated the segment.

Pronounced “ev-eye-a” it means “the first in existence” or “the living one”. It is highly appropriate; Lotus has an unquestionable reputation for its pioneering approach in both automotive and motorsport.

The Evija – as the first all-electric hypercar from a British car maker – continues that story of innovation.

Lotus Cars CEO Phil Popham said, “Evija is the perfect name for our new car because it’s the first hypercar from Lotus, our first electric offering and is the first new model under the stewardship of Geely.

“The Evija is a Lotus like no other, yet a true Lotus in every sense. It will re-establish our brand on the global automotive stage and pave the way for further visionary models.”

So what engine will power this hypercar?

In the past Lotus has always relied on engine partners like Toyota. Now under Geely it is most likely that this new Lotus hypercar will be using the electric powertrain from Polestar (which is part of Geely).

Here are the Polestar supercar specifications. It is equipped with two electric motors and a battery pack with a capacity of 78 kWh, which should be enough to provide a range of about 500 km.

The car is built on the CMA platform and boasts a high power of 408hp for a torque of 660Nm.

It will be able to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than five seconds. A performance package will also be available as an option with Öhlins shock absorbers, Brembo brakes and 20-inch wheels.

With the above electric drivetrain installed, you can expect very exciting performance figures with possible acceleration from 0-100 km/h in less than 3.2 seconds from its lightweight body with top speed and torque to match its Italian rivals.

More information and pictures will be shared in coming weeks.
