The latest in line is Camargue rice husk, used by Repetto to craft a new patent-finish ballet pump.
The kitchen and the closet have never been closer – even if you do happen to live in a duplex on Fifth Avenue in New York.
Today’s fashion industry is vying to find vegan and sustainable alternatives to some of its more polluting materials, or those of animal origin, by turning to the riches of nature – and our plates.
Pineapples, apples, grapes, mushrooms and corn waste are just some of the items on the menu for shoes and handbags, gradually replacing animal leather.
This is something that has obviously not escaped Repetto, a brand world-renowned for its famous ballet flats and slippers.
Now, the label is serving up a first vegan variation of its patent-finish shoe, using the husk of Camargue rice grown in Southern France – a first!
And it is the “Lili” model, initially created for Brigitte Bardot, which today has the privilege of debuting this discovery.
More precisely, it is the outsole that is composed in part of Camargue rice husk, to the tune of 5%, while the rest is made of rubber.
Made in Italy, the ballet pump’s upper is a mixture of cotton and synthetic materials, while the insole is designed in Spain in an imitation leather fabric.
In a statement, the brand says that by repurposing waste from the food industry, the Repetto atelier is playing a part in reducing the extraction of resources.
