Kids’ shows and K-dramas galore: new on Netflix, July 15-21

Plus, movies featuring Malaysia's own Henry Golding and much-missed entertainer Adibah Noor.

Highlights over the next seven days include a slew of Korean series and programmes for children, as well as films featuring Malaysia’s own Henry Golding and the much-missed entertainer Adibah Noor.

Tomorrow, July 15

  • ‘Backstreet Rookie’, season 1 (series)

In this K-series, a former troublemaker applies for a job at a convenience store owned by the same man who used to run errands for her a few years ago. A romantic comedy.

  • ‘Love Goals (Jaadugar)’ (film)

A handsome magician has two things on his mind: to practise magic, and to land the girl of his dreams. But he can only date his dream girl if he helps his local football team win a tournament.

The setback? He’s awkward, clumsy, and not athletic whatsoever. Will he be able to use his magic to develop some skills to get his ultimate prize?

  • ‘Mom, Don’t Do That!’ (series)

After her husband’s death, a 60-year-old mother decides to find love again – to the joy and annoyance of her two daughters. This Taiwanese romantic comedy is based on a true story.

  • ‘My Roommate Is a Gumiho’ (series)

To become a human, a 999-year-old gumiho – a nine-tailed spirit – named Shin Woo-yeo needs to fill his fox bead with human energy before he turns 1,000 years old. One day, a college girl, Lee Dam accidentally swallows Woo-yeo’s fox bead. Oh dear.

  • ‘Persuasion’ (film)

When Frederick Wentworth – the one who got away – crashes back into Anne Elliot’s life, she must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances. Starring Malaysia’s own Henry Golding and Dakota Johnson.

  • ‘Remarriage & Desires’ (series)

In this satire of Korean upper-class society, matchmaking company Rex exists to serve the wealthiest individuals who want to maintain or augment their status through marriage or remarriage.

  • ‘Sell Your Haunted House’, season 1 (series)

A real-estate broker who also happens to be an exorcist joins hands with a con artist to find out the truth behind her mother’s death 20 years ago. A supernatural K-drama.

  • ‘Youth of May’, season 1 (series)

An idealistic medical student gets married to a nurse after meeting her at the insistence of his father. Later, their fate becomes interlinked with the 1980 Gwangju Uprising. A supernatural historical K-drama.

Monday, July 18

  • ‘My Little Pony: A New Generation: Sing-Along’ (series)

A young pony makes a herd of new friends on a quest to bring magic back to her world! A programme for kids, lest this isn’t clear – though you’d be surprised how many “My Little Pony” fans are adults.

  • ‘StoryBots: Laugh, Learn, Sing: Collection 2: Learn to Read’ (series)

Join the StoryBots for bite-sized lessons about letters, phonics and more, set to a soundtrack kids and adults will love. No prizes for guessing the target audience of this show.

  • ‘Indian Predator: The Butcher of Delhi’ (documentary)

A series of mutilated bodies and taunting notes left outside a Delhi jail sends police hunting for a seasoned killer with a grudge against the system. A docuseries.

Thursday, July 21

  • ‘Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous’, season 5 (series)

Six teens invited to attend a state-of-the-art adventure camp on Isla Nublar must band together to survive when the dinosaurs break out of captivity.

  • ‘Mencari Rahmat’ (film)

Razak is falling for Rose; Azman has his eye on Ratna. Rose and Ratna both think they love a man named Rahmat. How they’ll sort it out is anyone’s guess!

This local adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest” stars the late Adibah Noor, Namron, Nadia Aqilah, Amerul Affendi, and Sharifah Amani.
