PARIS:
Do the British eat as much meat as the French? And who spends more time in the kitchen, Germans or Italians? To answer these questions, the company NielsenIQ surveyed over 37,000 people from Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the United Kingdom.

It shows the country where people are most likely to pay attention to the contents of what they’re eating is Spain (87%), followed by the UK and France.

The reasons respondents say they pay attention to their diet vary from one country to another. While 30% of Spaniards say they want to stay healthy, 37% of French people say they want to remain slim.

In addition to health concerns, the environment plays a key role in food consumption habits. This is especially the case in Germany, where 30% of respondents explain they’re cutting down on meat consumption to reduce the carbon footprint of their plate.

The French come in a close second, with 20% saying they do the same.

The amount of time spent preparing a meal also varies from country to country. The Spanish and Italians, for example, spend the most time cooking, while the Germans, British and French tend to prefer speed (27%, 22% and 20%, respectively).

In contrast to the British and the Germans, the Spanish, Italians and French seem to be particularly proud of their national culinary heritage. In these three countries, one out of two people believes their gastronomic culture is the best.
