With the weather being hot and humid most of the time, washing machines have become essential in many Malaysian homes. As such, it can be very distressing when they break down.
One common problem is that the washer simply doesn’t fill with water when it is turned on. If this is happening to you, check for the following causes before calling a professional.
- Check that the power switch or tap is turned on
This might seem obvious, but you never know – someone could have turned either of these off by accident.
- Check that the water hose is not bent or clogged
If you shifted the washing machine recently, it could have caused the water hose to become trapped between the machine and the wall, or become bent at an angle. Release it or straighten it and see if that works.
- Check whether the filters are dirty
Turn off the water, then unscrew the water hose from the washing machine and see if there is any filter blockage. Sometimes, dirt and rust can clog the filters and prevent water from flowing into the drum.
- Check that the door is closed properly
Often, the door needs to be closed properly for the machine to work, especially for front loaders. If the catch is damaged, the washer will think the door isn’t fully closed and will not allow water in.

- Check the water inlet valve
You will usually hear a loud click when you turn on the washing machine. This is the sound of the water inlet valve.
When it powers on, the solenoid – a type of wire coil – will open the valve and let water in. If you don’t hear a click, it could mean the valve is damaged or disconnected.
You might need to get a spare part to replace this, but it needs to match your machine brand and model number. If in doubt, call a professional.
Note that the cost of repair, including spare parts and labour, might cost between RM200 and RM250.
- Check the electronics circuit board
If none of the above rectifies it, then it could be a problem with your electronics. These circuits control the water level, the timing of the wash, the rinse and spin cycles, and many other functions.
If the circuit board is the problem, it could cost anywhere from RM300 to RM600 to fix, depending on how advanced your washing machine is. A service professional will be able to advise on this when they inspect your machine.
