PETALING JAYA:
Former attorney-general (AG) Abdul Gani Patail is set to practice law again once he is admitted to the Bar, The Malaysian Insider reported today.

Citing sources, the report stated that Gani had filed a petition for admission to the Bar in the High Court earlier this month to begin chambering under lawyer Ragunath Kesavan, who confirmed the news.

The source also said that while Gani could have sought an exemption from current AG Mohamed Ali Apandi from chambering before being called to the Bar, he did not do so.

According to the report, it is believed that Gani intends to start his own law firm.

Gani, who hails from Sabah was removed from office on July 27, months before his actual retirement, with ill health furnished as the sole reason.

At the time, he was part of a high level task force investigating the controversial 1Malaysia Development Berhad and the RM2.6 billion “donation” Prime Minister Najib Razak received in his personal bank accounts in 2013.

Gani served as AG for 13 years and joined public service in 1980 as a deputy public prosecutor in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

He officially retired on October 5, one day short of turning 60, the mandatory retirement age for civil servants.
