PETALING JAYA:
Penang Gerakan Youth is shocked that “green bicycle lanes” were painted on most pedestrian walkways in George Town without prior approval from the city council.

By painting such lanes green, the party’s secretary Ooi Zhi Yi said, it left no proper walkways for pedestrians.

He slammed the DAP-led state government for allegedly wasting RM30 million to build unsafe and improper bicycle lanes stretching 150 km in the city.

Ooi said the makeshift bicycle lanes posed a threat to people with disabilities, children as well as senior citizens because pedestrians were now forced to share the narrow pavements with cyclists.

“The safety of pedestrians have been compromised and jeopardised,” said Ooi in a statement.

The unsafe bicycle lanes, he pointed out, could be found in many places, including the heritage zone.

Ooi also alluded to PKR city councillor Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, who reportedly said the green bicycle lanes were a mistake and that the project was never discussed with his committee, or a definite decision arrived at.

He wondered how pedestrian walkways could be converted into bicycle lanes, especially without approval from the Penang Island City Council.

Ooi remarked that it looked as if councillors were not involved in local government administration and operations as they seemed clueless as to what was going on.

“Are the councillors mere puppets or rubber stamps to the warlords of DAP?”
