KUALA LUMPUR: Censor violent scenes in Tamil films to prevent youths from being influenced by them, said Malaysia Hindu Sangam yesterday.

The association’s president R S Mohan Shan said this was because youths were easily influenced by violent actions performed by their favourite heroes to the extent of trying to copy them.

“The violent actions in Tamil films are for entertainment purposes and not applicable in real life. But our Indian youths are easily influenced by the films,” Bernama quoted him as saying.

Citing the gruesome killing of DPP Kevin Morais and the Tapah murders as examples of violent murder cases, he added, “There are violent killing scenes in Tamil films that prompt youths to be involved in activities that contravene the law.”

Bernama also spoke to Malaysian Crime Prevention Awareness Board president Dr Shaharuddin Awang Yahya, who echoed Mohan’s views.

However, a former policeman who used to be involved in criminal investigations said the percentage of Tamil films contributing to violence in the country was negligible.

“Not many Indian youths are influenced by the violent actions in films despite often viewing such films,” said R Karniappan, who served in the force for 36 years.
