KUALA LUMPUR:
The Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Armed Forces have launched a 24-hour joint patrol at popular public spots in the Klang Valley.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar and Armed Forces chief Gen Zulkifeli Mohd Zin who confirmed this, said several strategic places around the capital and Selangor had been identified for the purpose.

Both of them, however, did not disclose the exact number of places and personnel involved, for security reasons.

“Our focus is on areas in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. In the event of spotting any suspicious individuals, our personnel will detain them,” Khalid told Bernama, here yesterday.

A similar joint patrol between the two security forces was held during the ASEAN Summit in November last year.

Zulkifli said that at present, there were no military assets deployed, only personnel were deployed to specified locations.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Najib Razak reportedly said the joint patrol was decided at a meeting of the National Security Council convened to discuss security measures following violent incidents in several major cities in the world.

Najib said areas like Bukit Bintang and the main shopping complexes were among areas that would be under the joint patrol.

Meanwhile, a Bernama observation around the capital, especially in Bukit Bintang found people conducting their daily business as usual.

A fruit seller in Jalan Imbi near Bukit Bintang, known as Ching, said police were always seen patrolling the area. So far, it had been business as usual without any untoward incidents and the presence of security personnel was certainly comforting, he added.

A tourist from India, Mahesh Kanna, 32, who was at a mall in Bukit Bintang, said he was not worried and that he and his wife, who have been here for a week now, felt more comfortable and safe with the police presence.
