PETALING JAYA:
Scores of shoppers who frequent the Atria Shopping Mall have vowed to boycott the establishment after learning that the management had removed a Wishing Cards programme it had set-up earlier after it felt that some of the “wishes” penned by shoppers were “politically sensitive and possibly defamatory” in nature.

According to an article in Malaysiakini, some of the “wishes” included that Prime Minister Najib Razak fall into a drain.

Picking up on this “wish” another shopper jotted down a note that read: “It is not enough for Najib to fall into the drain. Najib and Rosmah must fall into the drain.”

In a Facebook posting, the management explained their move to discontinue the programme, saying, “The Management of Atria Shopping Gallery wants to make clear to all, that these opinions and views expressed on the Atria Wishing Cards are the personal opinions of the persons who penned the note(s) and do not reflect the opinions or views of the Atria Shopping Gallery and its Management. Atria Shopping Gallery and its Management do not endorse nor encourage the posting of such statements.

“Arising from the above, Atria Shopping Gallery has since taken down this activity.”

Netizens however were incensed at the decision by mall’s management to “censor” the public and many left comments criticising the move and vowing to boycott them in the future.

Kishin Sham Mahtani said: “So it seems Atria Shopping Mall has decided to censor the public’s wish list, well you just lost any chance of me ever shopping in your place.”

Mohd Hafiz Yusof said, “Whats so offensive about asking incompetent leaders to leave the job? I guess i’ll avoid Atria from now on” while JC Jun added, “It is so unwise by the management to remove people’s new year wish and it is rude. Now we know which place not to go, this such crony mall.”

One asked “freedom of speech mana?” while another called the shopping mall a “gutless crony.”
