PETALING JAYA: An astonishing knuckleball strike by Penang’s Faiz Subri has became an immediate contender for Fifa’s 2016 Puskas Award 2016.

Videos of the outrageous goal went viral on social media on Tuesday night, with awestruck netizens declaring that they “could not believe their eyes”.

In football, a knuckleball happens when a player kicks the ball which initially goes one direction, before swerving the other way and bamboozles a goalkeeper.

Among the players known to score such amazing goals are Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

“It seemed to defy physics. It makes no sense. Crazy,” Facebook user Afiq Fauzi commented.

“I have been watching football for 30 years and I have never seen a goal like that,” Facebook user Keng Yew commented on Twitter.

The wonder strike, which got over 32,000 views on Youtube, was scored by the 28-year old midfielder, and helped his Penang side ease past Pahang FC 4-1.

Penang is currently fifth in the Malaysian Super League, three points behind Felda United after just two games.

The Puskas Award is given to the player judged to have scored the most aesthetically significant or “most beautiful” goal within the year.

The 2015 Puskas Award was won by Brazilian Wendell Lira.

Faiz, however will have to wait until January next year to find out if he wins the award.
