“She thinks she is the only one who has the capacity to be honourable with her actions. Everyone else is suspect in their motive,” the former law minister told FMT when contacted.
Chin had earlier voiced her concerns about Zaid’s proposed gathering on March 27 that sought the resignation of the Prime Minister, Attorney-General and Inspector-General of Police.
She was also reported to have said the gathering should be more than just a vessel for former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad to fulfil his agenda of removing Prime Minister Najib Razak for good.
On Chin’s claim that the agenda for the March 27 gathering was not clear, Zaid pointed out that Bersih 2.0 too started with a single agenda of championing for clean and fair elections, but “ended with a gamut of demands” later.
Bersih 2.0 is a coalition fighting for electoral reforms. However in the fourth rally it organised last year, it also demanded Najib step down over his handling of 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
Zaid stressed that his peaceful gathering was to make Najib, AG Apandi Ali and IGP Khalid Abu Bakar responsible and accountable for their actions.
“You tell me which is clearer?”
He added he had spoken to Chin regarding her concerns that the gathering was promoting a “Tun Mahathir Mohamad agenda”, but maintained that there was nothing much he could do about it.
“Some will always be distrustful of Tun M, no matter what he does,” he said, alluding to Mahathir’s moniker.
Earlier this month the lawyer turned politician called for a gathering to be held next month on the grounds that Najib was dismantling public institutions by appointing “yes-men” to government bodies.
He also urged Malaysians to rally behind Mahathir in his bid to get Najib to step down as prime minister.
