KUALA LUMPUR: National cyclist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang clinched the bronze medal in the men’s keirin event at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships at Lee Valley Velopark, Stratford, London, on Sunday.

The gold was won by Germany’s Joachim Eiler while the silver by Eddie Dawkins of New Zealand.

Earlier, during the first elimination round, the world number one in keirin had only managed third placing and had to go through the repechage round to book his berth in the semifinals.

Dubbed the “Pocket Rocketmen”, he beat Andre Vinokourov (Ukraine), Jacob Schmid (Australia) and Hersony Canelon (Venezuela) in the repechage round.

Mohd Azizulhasni qualified for the final round after coming in second in the second heat of the second semi-final.

He has already qualified for the keirin event for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics after coming out tops in Asia.
