You can’t have your pie and eat it, Nazri tells Opposition

PUTRAJAYA:
Umno Minister Nazri Aziz has pointed to the irony that the Opposition members in Sarawak, currently crying foul over the state’s decision to bar some individuals, are also the ones who have pleaded for the Malaysian Agreement 1963 to be respected.

He said Sarawakian Opposition members have time and time again reminded the Federal Government to stay true to the 18-point agreement signed during the formation of Malaysia in 1963. So, they too should do the same.

“Why is it that they (the Opposition), especially the ones in Sarawak, want to make noise about the powers of the state government to ban certain people from coming into Sarawak?

“You can’t have your pie and eat it too. If you agree that these 18 points must be respected, then when it is enforced, you have to respect the decision. You must be consistent,” Nazri said during an exclusive interview with FMT yesterday.

The tourism and culture minister agreed with Chief Minister Adenan Satem’s move to deny entry to certain individuals.

This is especially so as “prevention is better than cure” and the Opposition’s track record of harping on sensitive issues may hurt the exceptional display of racial harmony in Sarawak, he added.

“Sarawak’s way of life is very different from us. The relationship between the various communities there is excellent.

“He (Adenan) doesn’t want these irresponsible people coming into the state just because of the election and dividing the people by bringing up sensitive issues.

“When the election is over, these West Malaysians are going to come back here while the Sarawakians will be left with all the divisive issues which they would have to sort out on their own.”

Nazri was commenting on the long list of Opposition members who have been denied entry into Sarawak.

The latest victims of this ban was PKR’s Dr Afif Bahardin who was barred today and Abdul Malik Abul Kassim, who was stopped after arriving at the Kuching airport on Sunday.

Two DAP members, Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching and the DAP’s mascot creator Ooi Leng Hang, were also barred entry last Friday. Others who have previously been turned back include PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar and R Sivarasa, Amanah’s Mohamad Sabu and the DAP’s Tony Pua.
