Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said said this in regard to the RM2.6 billion donation made to the prime minister’s personal accounts.
Yesterday, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir had come out to say that the donation was indeed from his country and that nothing was expected in return for it.
In a statement today, Azalina referenced the foreign minister’s comments and said this showed the accusations by Opposition parties and the Citizens’ Declaration were indeed false.
“The Attorney-General (AG) revealed that the money was from Saudi Arabia and not 1MDB, yet the Citizens’ Declaration kept on confusing the rakyat, accusing the prime minister.
“Even the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) had cleared the PM of any wrongdoing in 1MDB.
“So who are the liars here?
“I believe that the rakyat is getting a clearer picture on this issue and will not be easily fooled by the false accusations made by the group in the Citizens’ Declaration to bring down the PM,” Azalina said.
AG Mohamed Apandi Ali had cleared Najib of any wrongdoing on Jan 26 in relation to investigations into the SRC International Sdn Bhd and the RM2.6 billion alleged to have been deposited into the PM’s personal accounts.
Opposition parties and the Citizens’ Declaration group, which includes former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, however, had persistently lambasted and ignored the AG’s statements while urging for the removal of Najib as prime minister.
London’s The Guardian reported yesterday that the Saudi foreign minister was asked at the summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul if he was aware of the details of the political donation.
He said: “It is a genuine donation with nothing expected in return.
“And we are also fully aware that the Attorney-General of Malaysia has thoroughly investigated the matter and found no wrongdoing.
“So, as far as we are concerned, the matter is closed,” he said, without elaborating on who donated the money or why.
