KUALA LUMPUR:
The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) have identified 46 of the 73 Malaysians believed to have joined the terrorist group Daesh as being still in Syria.

Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism assistant director Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said of the total, 19 have died and another eight have returned home.

“Based on intelligence information obtained, of the 19 Malaysians who died in Syria or Iraq, seven were killed by becoming suicide bombers, while 12 were killed during clashes with the Syrian army,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.

In the meantime, Ayob said that so far 10 individuals have been charged, including six of them investigated under Section 130JB (1) (a) of the Penal Code.

He said those accused possessed high jihadist ideology and have been given counselling sessions during the interrogation process.

He said, police appealed to the public for cooperation to channel all available information about planned terrorist activities dictated by any Daesh militant groups.

“Police are also cooperating with local and foreign intelligence agencies in sharing security information to detect individuals spreading militancy and recruiting militants in the country,” he said.
