Body of Chinese national found floating in Pulau Perhentian

Besut police chief says the victim, Zhe Liu, 31, had gone snorkelling alone.

The body of a man found floating in the sea near Perhentian Island Resort, Pulau Perhentian Besar here, has been confirmed to be of a Chinese citizen.

Besut police chief Supt Mohd Zamri Mohd Rowi said the victim, Zhe Liu, 31, a native of Henan Province, was said to have arrived at Pulau Perhentian with his wife and five other friends on April 23 and was scheduled to return home today.

“Initial investigations revealed the group was staying at Awana Resort on the island. Before the incident, Zhe Liu went snorkelling alone while his friends and wife joined a diving activity at another location,” he said.

Mohd Zamri said the body was taken to Besut Hospital and Chinese embassy officials were expected to arrive last night or today to claim the body.

Zhe Liu’s body was found by a boat operator about 300 metres from the beach near Perhentian Island Resort about 11.50am yesterday.
