PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia’s very own Rita Ghani is one of two women referees from Asia who have been selected to officiate at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro this August.

According to The Star Online, the 38-year-old Sabahan, and North Korea’s Ri Hyang-ok, were appointed by the Fifa Referees Committee recently.

Rita has been officiating football matches since 2004. She was named the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Referee of the Year in 2014, only to make history a year later by being the first woman official to represent Malaysia at the Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.

The Star also reported that the men’s football games would be officiated by 18 referees and 32 assistant referees, while the women’s tournament would have 14 referees and 24 assistant referees.

Meanwhile badminton ace Lee Chong Wei, who will also be representing the country at the Games, remained modest on his chances of getting gold.

“Even if I lose in a tournament, I can still come back next year for the same tournament, but it won’t be the same if I lose in Rio.

“I have beaten both Lin (Dan) and Chen (Long) in Wuhan, but it doesn’t mean I can repeat the same result in Rio. The Olympic Games is a totally different story,” Lee said after beating Chen in the final of the Badminton Asia Championships last week.
