KUALA LUMPUR: Marite (Rin) Norris, who lost her children — Mo, Evie and Otis, — when they perished along with their grandfather Nick in the downing of MH17, gave birth to baby girl Violet on Tuesday, according to The Australian. MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014.

Rin and her husband, Anthony Masin, stayed behind in Amsterdam while their three children returned home to Perth with their grandfather to go back to school.

An overjoyed Masin said that Violet’s arrival, “an amazing gift”, brought “love and light, hope and joy” to him and his wife. He recalled that his family had been “torn apart” when missiles, allegedly fired by militant separatists, brought down MH17.

“We believe that Mo, whose 14th birthday was Saturday, Evie, 12 next week, Otis, 10 next month, and Grandad Nick have sent us an amazing gift. Violet’s birth is a testament to our belief that love is stronger than hate,” the happy couple said in a statement.

“We still live with pain, but Violet, and the knowledge that all four kids are with us always, brings light to our darkness. As Martin Luther King said, ‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that’.”

“We will continue to love all four of our children equally. Violet brings some hope and joy for us. We hope she brings hope and joy for you too.”

There were 38 Australian nationals and residents on board MH17 which carried 298 passengers and crew.
