Stop acquiring assets from KTMB, railway union urges

KUALA LUMPUR:
The Railwaymen Union of Malaysia (RUM) today urged the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) to stop the acquisition of assets from Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB).

RUM President Abdul Razak Md Hassan said that this is because he does not want KTMB to suffer the same fate as Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB), who are currently faced with various difficulties.

“The people of KTMB got into a state of anxiety when they heard that RAC wanted to acquire its assets. RAC is nothing more than a trustee, but they are trying to broaden that scope.

“Their intentions are not fair to KTMB. It is as if KTMB did not do their jobs, as if they are not productive. It is just not fair to the workers of KTMB,” Razak said.

He warned that RAC doing so would also “destroy” KTMB.

“They (RAC) told us to be ready. We cannot accept that because we do not think it is right,” he said.

On a separate matter, he also called for KTMB workers to be given “reasonable wages”, as the current salaries are lower than that of civil servants.

“If not more than the government, at least give us the same amount as the government. If they can’t give us anything, then return KTMB to the public sector,” he said.
