If Azmin, together with DAP, can ensure Amanah’s victory, continued Zaid, then the Selangor Menteri Besar will emerge the new leader of the Opposition coalition of Pakatan Harapan, unseating Anwar Ibrahim. “Even the move by some PKR members to remove Azmin will not succeed.”
The former de facto Law Minister was assuming that Azmin, Mat Sabu and Lim Kit Siang will ensure that there will only be one candidate to represent the Citizens’ Declaration movement. In other words, he stressed, there will be only one candidate representing PKR/DAP/Amanah.
If that happens, he pledged, he too will be tempted to give ceramah, if invited by the voters of Sungai Besar.
Zaid believes the June 18 by-election in Sungai Besar will prove to be one of the most intriguing political events of the year. “Its significance will be felt right through to the next General Election.”
This by-election will also test the strength of Amanah and PAS, ventured Zaid. “Both claim to be the true Islamic party in Malaysia.”
“While Amanah members remain forever loyal to the late Tok Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, PAS members are under the influence of the party’s current president Abdul Hadi Awang.”
This contest was therefore a mouthwatering prospect, especially if Azmin goes all the way to support Mat Sabu instead of PAS, said Zaid. “It’s certain that DAP will hold Mat Sabu’s hands. The party’s leaders have made that very clear.”
“Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad will also spend time campaigning in Sungai Besar to help the Citizens’ Declaration candidate, if there is no division amongst members of the Citizens Group.”
